Sophos XGS 88 Standard Protection License Renewal — Reliable Firewall Security, Renewed

License term: 5 year / 60 month

What is this product?

The Sophos XGS Standard Protection License Renewal extends your firewall's core security subscription — keeping your network protected, your VPN running, and your support active without interruption. It's Sophos's most widely adopted license bundle, covering the essential security layers that the majority of organizations depend on every day: network threat prevention, web filtering, application control, and 24/7 support.

If your security requirements don't demand zero-day sandboxing or centralized SD-WAN orchestration, Standard Protection gives you everything you need at a straightforward, cost-effective price point. Available in 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year terms.

Why renew before it lapses?

When your Standard Protection subscription expires, your XGS firewall doesn't become a paperweight — but it does become significantly less secure. IPS signatures stop updating, ATP threat feeds go stale, web filtering ceases, and firmware updates are no longer available. You're left with a network perimeter that looks intact but isn't.

Renewing on time means:

  • Continuous IPS, ATP, and web threat protection with up-to-date signatures
  • Uninterrupted web filtering and application control for all users
  • Ongoing firmware and feature updates to keep your appliance current
  • Active 24/7 technical support and hardware replacement warranty
  • No scramble to reactivate lapsed services under pressure

What's included in the Standard Protection bundle?

Standard Protection includes four core components: Base License, Network Protection, Web Protection, and Enhanced Support. Here's what each one covers:

Base License — Networking Foundation Core networking, wireless, Xstream architecture, unlimited remote access VPN, site-to-site VPN, and on-box reporting. This is the operational backbone of your firewall — routing, SD-WAN, application-aware traffic management, and connectivity for your entire site.

Network Protection — Threat Prevention The Xstream TLS and DPI engine, Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), Advanced Threat Protection (ATP), Synchronized Security Heartbeat, and SD-RED VPN management. The DPI engine inspects traffic in a single streaming pass — no chained inspection engines, no unnecessary latency. Security Heartbeat integrates with Sophos endpoints to automatically isolate devices showing signs of compromise.

Web Protection — User & Application Control The Xstream TLS and DPI engine, web security and control, application control, and reporting. Filter web access by user, group, URL, category, and keyword. Block malware, malicious scripts, and unauthorized applications before they reach your users, with full visibility into web and application usage across your network.

Enhanced Support — 24/7 Coverage 24/7 support, feature updates, and an advanced replacement hardware warranty for the term of the license. Direct access to Sophos engineers, proactive firmware releases, and hardware swap coverage — so a failed appliance doesn't become a multi-day outage.

Standard vs. Xstream Protection — Which do you need?

The majority of customers opt for the Standard Protection bundle in the long term. The two features exclusive to Xstream — Zero-Day sandboxing and Central Orchestration — are genuinely valuable, but not essential for every environment. Standard Protection is the right choice if:

  • You have fewer than four firewalls (manual VPN configuration remains practical)
  • You don't require machine-learning file sandboxing for unknown threats
  • You don't need DNS-layer protection or XDR/MDR telemetry integration
  • You want strong, proven firewall security without paying for features you won't use
Feature Standard Protection Xstream Protection
Networking, SD-WAN & VPN
IPS & ATP
TLS 1.3 Inspection (DPI)
Web & Application Control
Synchronized Security Heartbeat
24/7 Support & Hardware Warranty
Zero-Day Sandboxing

If you need the features in the bottom five rows, consider upgrading to the Xstream Protection renewal instead. If the top six rows cover your requirements, Standard Protection delivers everything you need.

Common Questions

Do I need my serial number to renew? Yes — your XGS appliance serial number is required at checkout to bind the renewal to the correct device. Have it ready before you order.

Can I upgrade from Standard to Xstream at renewal? Yes. Renewal time is the natural moment to upgrade. If your security posture has evolved or you're managing a growing number of firewalls, stepping up to Xstream Protection adds Zero-Day sandboxing, DNS Protection, Central Orchestration, and XDR/MDR integration.

What happens if my license has already expired? You can still renew. Contact your Sophos partner or reseller to reinstate the subscription. Some features may require manual reactivation after the license is applied in Sophos Central.

Can I add Email Protection or Web Server Protection? Yes — these are not included in Standard Protection but are available as individual add-on subscriptions alongside your renewal.

Is Enhanced Plus Support available? Standard Protection includes Enhanced Support. If you need direct access to senior Sophos engineers and an extended hardware warranty, you can upgrade by purchasing the Enhanced to Enhanced Plus Support upgrade separately.

Is a multi-year renewal worth it? For most organizations, yes. A 3- or 5-year term eliminates annual renewal risk, locks in your coverage, and typically offers better per-year value than rolling 12-month renewals.

License Renewal start:

If purchased before the existing license expiration date, the Xstream Protection license will renew on the anniversary date.

The new license must be applied to the firewall.
