Cybersecurity for clinics, hospitals and health networks.

Patient records, imaging systems and connected medical devices, protected by Sophos and sized by a partner that serves healthcare providers across Canada and the United States.

In plain terms: Healthcare is breached through two doors: ransomware crews who know a hospital cannot wait to restore, and ordinary staff mistakes with patient records. The defense has to cover both, and it has to keep the EHR, imaging and devices running while it does.

Each row shows what can go wrong, which rule or standard expects you to control it, and the products that do. The tags under each risk show where Sophos or TrendAI name the same risk on their own industry pages or in their research.

Cyber insurance: what it pays for and what insurers check

Cyber insurance pays for the cost of an attack or a data breach. Before quoting, insurers check a short list of security controls; missing ones raise the premium, cut the limit, or end the conversation.

Your own costs

  • Incident response and forensic investigators
  • Restoring data and rebuilding systems
  • Lost income while the business is down
  • Ransom or extortion demands, where the policy and law allow
  • Breach notices, call centers and credit monitoring
  • Funds lost to fake invoices or wire fraud (often a small sublimit, sometimes excluded)

Claims against you

  • Lawsuits from customers or partners whose data was exposed
  • Regulatory investigations, and fines where the law allows them to be insured
  • Card brand assessments after a payment breach (on some policies)
  • Liability for spreading malware to others

Policies differ. Read the exclusions, waiting period and sublimits, especially for ransomware and social engineering fraud.

The 12 controls insurers look for

1
MFA for remote and privileged (admin) accessSophos ITDR shows gaps; 1Password; Workspace Protection
2

3

The list follows Marsh's twelve key cyber controls. Source

Answer the application accurately. In 2022 an Illinois manufacturer's application said it required MFA for email and remote network access. After a ransomware attack, the insurer said MFA was only on the firewall and asked a court to cancel the policy. On August 26, 2022 the court entered judgment rescinding the policy, with the company's agreement, leaving it without coverage. Source

Where insurers dig deeper: Healthcare applications get the closest look at backups and recovery time, MFA on remote access to clinical systems, and how medical devices that cannot be patched are kept apart.

Renewing or applying for cyber insurance? We map your current setup to the twelve controls before you fill in the application, so the answers are accurate and the gaps are known.

A worked example: a multi-site clinic group

A clinic group with a main site, three satellite clinics, about 120 staff and an on-premises EHR server would typically run:

Main site and EHR serversXGS 2300 with Xstream, Sophos Endpoint on servers and PCs, MDR Plus
Three satellite clinicsXGS 118 or 128 with Xstream, AP6 access points, SD-WAN to the main site

Frequently asked questions

Which cybersecurity rules and frameworks apply to healthcare?

The main ones on this page are listed by country. In the United States: HIPAA Security Rule (in force; HHS proposed an update in January 2025), HHS 405(d) Health Industry Cybersecurity Practices. In Canada, Ontario: O. Reg. 51/26, Enhancing Digital Security and Trust Act. In Canada: PHIPA (Ontario) and provincial health privacy acts. Many organizations also organize the work with the voluntary NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 and its six functions: govern, identify, protect, detect, respond and recover. Check the linked sources for current status and dates.

Which products cover the main cybersecurity needs for healthcare?

Sophos covers the firewall, endpoint, email, identity, network detection and 24/7 managed detection and response, and TrendAI Vision One offers an alternative for most of the same needs, except the firewall itself. Neither Sophos nor TrendAI sells backup or a password manager through Nuformat, so N-able Cove or Axcient handle backup and recovery, and 1Password Business handles passwords. The feature match table on this page lists each need with the product from each vendor.

Does Sophos make a clinic HIPAA or PHIPA compliant?

No product does on its own. HIPAA and PHIPA are obligations on the organization. Sophos supplies the technical safeguards those rules ask for: encryption in transit, MFA and access monitoring, malware protection, logging, and the ability to restore. Nuformat maps the products to the safeguard list so the paperwork matches the network.

What is the most common way healthcare organizations are breached?

According to the Verizon 2026 DBIR healthcare snapshot, System Intrusion, which is mostly ransomware, accounts for 61% of healthcare breaches, and exploited vulnerabilities (20%) are now the most common first step, ahead of phishing (14%).

How do we protect medical devices that cannot run security software?

Put them on their own network segment behind the Sophos XGS firewall, allow only the traffic they need, and watch that segment with a Sophos NDR sensor. Detection then happens on the wire, so the device itself is never touched.

What does the Ontario cyber regulation require of hospitals?

O. Reg. 51/26, in force July 1, 2026, requires public hospitals to name a senior cyber security contact, report critical incidents to the ministry within 72 hours, and submit a cyber maturity assessment by July 1, 2027 and every two years after that.

Can Nuformat quote for both Canadian and US clinics?

Yes. Nuformat is a Sophos Silver Partner with offices in Markham, Ontario and Dallas, Texas, quotes in CAD or USD, and ships to both countries.

Will Sophos help us get or renew cyber insurance?

It covers much of what insurers ask about: MFA visibility, EDR, email security, logging and 24/7 response through MDR. Backups come from N-able Cove or Axcient. Insurers decide coverage and price, so answer the application accurately; Nuformat can map your current controls to the questionnaire before you submit it.
