The short version
SonicWall covers the firewall basics well and its Capture ATP sandbox with RTDMI is a solid engine. Which one fits you
Choose Sophos XGS when
- You want management, reporting, and support included, with two licensing choices.
- You run Sophos endpoint or want an MDR service that covers firewall, endpoint, email, and identity together.
- You inspect encrypted traffic and need TLS 1.3 inspection without a throughput cliff.
- You want network detection in the firewall rather than as a separate product.
SonicWall may still fit when
- You have a large installed base of SonicWall policy and staff trained on SonicOS, and a refresh cycle is not due yet.
- Your MSP standardizes on SonicWall and NSM and you are happy with that relationship.
- You only need the firewall basics at the lowest possible entry price and do not plan to add endpoint or MDR.

Common questions
Can Sophos XGS replace a SonicWall TZ or NSa one for one?+
Yes. XGS 88 to 138 cover the TZ range for desktop deployments, and XGS 2100 to 4500 cover the NSa 2700 to 4700 class in 1U. We match by users, WAN speed, and inspection load rather than by model number.
Will my SonicWall policies migrate?+
We rebuild them on Sophos Firewall as part of the deployment. Address objects, NAT, VPN tunnels, and web policies map cleanly; the SonicWall-specific parts, like Capture Client enforcement, are replaced by Synchronized Security.
What does Sophos include that SonicWall charges for?+
Sophos Central cloud management and reporting, zero-touch deployment, Enhanced Support, and network detection and response come with Standard or Xstream Protection. On SonicWall, longer cloud reporting retention, deeper analytics, and the endpoint agent are separate subscriptions.
Do you sell SonicWall?+
