Sophos XGS vs. WatchGuard Firebox
WatchGuard sells the Firebox mostly through managed service providers, with security services bundled as Basic or Total Security Suite. Here is how that compares with Sophos XGS and Xstream Protection.
The short version
Both vendors bundle their security services and both include cloud management. WatchGuard's Total Security Suite is a full package and includes an endpoint EDR component. Sophos separates the firewall from a stronger endpoint product, Intercept X, and ties the two together with Synchronized Security, then covers both with the same MDR service.

WatchGuard Cloud keeps 90 days of logs and one day of reports on Basic, 365 days and 30 days on Total. Sophos Central reporting comes with either bundle.

If your endpoint product is the one that catches the attack, the firewall should react to it. Sophos Intercept X is a Gartner Leader; EDR Core is a starting point.

Choose Sophos XGS when
- You want a Gartner Leader endpoint product and a firewall that reacts to it automatically.
- You want one MDR service that covers firewall, endpoint, email, identity, and third-party tools.
- You need network detection and response inside the firewall.
- You are buying direct or through a partner rather than through a WatchGuard MSP contract.
WatchGuard may still fit when
- Your MSP runs its whole practice on WatchGuard Cloud and ThreatSync and bundles everything into one monthly fee.
- You want a light endpoint agent included in the firewall bundle and do not plan a separate endpoint purchase.
- You have Firebox hardware under Total Security Suite with time left on the term.

Common questions
Is Xstream Protection the same idea as Total Security Suite?+
Close. Both bundle IPS, web filtering, sandboxing, DNS protection, and cloud management. Xstream also includes SD-WAN orchestration and the XDR and MDR connector; Total includes ThreatSync and EDR Core. The bigger difference is the endpoint product behind each.
Which Sophos model replaces a Firebox T series or M series?+
Firebox T20 to T85 map to XGS 88 to 138 on the desktop, and M290 to M690 map to XGS 2100 to 4500 in 1U. We size on users, WAN speed, and whether you inspect encrypted traffic.
Can Sophos MDR watch a Firebox?+
Sophos MDR works with many third-party firewalls through integrations, but the automatic isolation and Active Threat Response features need a Sophos Firewall. Most customers switch the firewall when they move to Sophos MDR.
