Sophos XGS 4300 buying guide: full specs, pricing, and where it fits
The Sophos XGS 4300 is where the 1U range stops being a step up and becomes a different class of appliance. It delivers 75 Gbps firewall throughput, 29.5 Gbps IPS, 26.2 Gbps threat protection and 8 Gbps of TLS inspection, with 16.6 million concurrent connections and four SFP+ 10 Gigabit ports built in. Compared with the 3300 below it, threat protection more than doubles and TLS inspection more than doubles again.
This guide leads with the datasheet, then shows the whole 1U range side by side so you can judge whether the 4300 is the right stop or whether the 4500 is worth the difference.
Sophos XGS 4300 full specifications
Sophos-published figures. Treat throughput as vendor-measured under set conditions and size to your real traffic.
Performance
| Metric | XGS 4300 |
|---|---|
| Firewall throughput | 75,000 Mbps (75 Gbps) |
| IPS throughput | 29,500 Mbps |
| Threat protection throughput | 26,200 Mbps |
| Xstream TLS (SSL) inspection | 8,000 Mbps |
| IPsec VPN throughput | 62,500 Mbps |
| Concurrent connections | 16,600,000 |
| New connections per second | 368,000 |
Interfaces and hardware
| Item | XGS 4300 |
|---|---|
| Fixed Ethernet interfaces | 4 x GE copper, 4 x 2.5 GE copper, 4 x SFP+ 10 GE fibre |
| Bypass port pairs | 1 |
| Flexi Port bay | 1, for an optional expansion module |
| Form factor | 1U rackmount |
Note the four SFP+ 10 Gigabit ports are built in, not an add-on. On the 2100 and 2300 you buy a Flexi Port module to get 10G. On the 4300 you get four of them as standard, and the Flexi Port bay is still free for something else.

Every model links to its product page, where the current price is shown. If the next model up is worth the difference for your site, buy that one instead. Size on the TLS column rather than firewall throughput, since almost all web traffic is encrypted.
Reading that table
- The 3300 to 4300 step is the largest in the range. Threat protection goes from 10 to 26.2 Gbps and TLS inspection from 3.13 to 8 Gbps. Nothing else in the 1U lineup jumps like that.
- The 4500 is a modest step above. TLS 10.6 against 8, threat protection 31.85 against 26.2. Roughly a third more capacity. Worth pricing, but it is not the leap the 3300 to 4300 move is.
- If you are sizing between a 3300 and a 4300, price both. The capability gap is wider than most buyers expect, and the 4300 is often the better value per Gbps of inspection.
Who the XGS 4300 is for
This is a large single site, a campus, or a data-centre edge. The combination that defines it is 8 Gbps of TLS inspection with 16.6 million concurrent connections and four 10G ports on the front panel. If your constraint is inspecting a lot of encrypted traffic across many simultaneous sessions, this is the model that stops being a compromise.
It is also a common choice where a smaller appliance has been running with Xstream features switched off to keep up. If that describes your current firewall, the 4300 removes the reason to run it degraded.
Flexi Port expansion
One Flexi Port bay, and it takes any module rated for XGS rackmount models, including the 4 port 10GbE SFP+ module and the PoE module. Because 10G is already on board, the bay is usually spent on PoE or extra copper rather than more fibre.
How to buy
| Route | Upfront | Monthly | You own the hardware |
|---|---|---|---|
| Term licence, 1, 3 or 5 year | See current price | None | Yes. Price locked for the term |
| Own the appliance, licence monthly | Appliance price | Ask for the current rate | Yes |
| Hardware as a Service | $0 | Ask for the current rate | No, the MSP owns it, and payments are perpetual |

Standard or Xstream Protection?
Xstream adds TLS 1.3 inspection, cloud sandboxing and the advanced IPS. Buying a 4300 without Xstream means paying for 8 Gbps of TLS inspection capacity and then not using it. Standard covers the base firewall plus SD-WAN and ZTNA. On this model it rarely makes sense.

Frequently asked questions
What are the Sophos XGS 4300 specifications?
The XGS 4300 delivers 75 Gbps firewall throughput, 29.5 Gbps IPS, 26.2 Gbps threat protection and 8 Gbps TLS inspection, with 16,600,000 concurrent connections and 62.5 Gbps IPsec VPN. Fixed ports are 4 x GE copper, 4 x 2.5 GE copper and 4 x SFP+ 10 GE fibre, plus one Flexi Port bay.
Does the Sophos XGS 4300 have 10 Gigabit ports built in?
Yes. Four SFP+ 10 Gigabit fibre ports are fixed on the appliance, so you do not need a Flexi Port module to get 10G as you would on a 2100 or 2300. The expansion bay remains free for PoE or additional copper.
Should I buy the XGS 4300 or the XGS 3300?
The 3300 to 4300 step is the largest in the 1U range. Threat protection goes from 10 to 26.2 Gbps and TLS inspection from 3.13 to 8 Gbps. If you inspect a lot of encrypted traffic, the 4300 is usually better value per Gbps of inspection. Price both before deciding.
Should I buy the XGS 4300 or the XGS 4500?
The 4500 offers roughly a third more capacity, 10.6 Gbps TLS against 8, and 31.85 Gbps threat protection against 26.2. That is a modest step compared with the jump from the 3300. Choose the 4500 if you expect growth beyond the 4300 ceiling within the term you are buying.
What does the Sophos XGS 4300 cost?
Current pricing for the appliance and each subscription term is shown on its product page, which always reflects the live figure. Monthly licensing and Hardware as a Service are quoted rather than listed at this size, so ask us and we will give you all three so you can compare.
How many users does the XGS 4300 support?
Sophos does not publish user counts per model, so we do not quote them. Sizing depends on your internet speed, how many services you enable and how much traffic you inspect. Send us those three and we will size it against the Sophos sizing tool.
