How to choose a Sophos firewall.
Picking a firewall comes down to five decisions: the size, how it runs, the protection, the support, and how you pay. This guide walks each one in plain terms, and we are happy to make the call with you at the end.

Five decisions, in order.
Work top to bottom. Each step narrows the choice, and none of them needs deep networking knowledge.
Size the appliance
This comes down to two things: how many people sit behind the firewall, and how fast your internet connection is. Those set the model range, from the desktop XGS for a small office, to 1U rackmount for a multi-site business, to 2U for an enterprise or campus edge. Match the model to your throughput needs, not to a number on a box.
Compare models by sizeDecide how it runs
Every option runs the same Sophos Firewall software, so the features are identical. What changes is the form factor. A hardware XGS appliance is the usual choice and gives you the accelerated performance. A virtual firewall runs as a VM on your own servers. A software or cloud deployment puts the same firewall at a cloud edge in AWS or Azure. Pick hardware unless you have a specific reason to run it virtual or in the cloud.
Choose your protection
The appliance ships with a perpetual Base License covering networking, VPN, and the Xstream architecture, but it needs a protection bundle to actually inspect threats. Standard Protection adds network and web protection with support. Xstream Protection, the one most businesses pick, adds zero-day sandboxing, DNS Protection, NDR, and more. A Base License on its own does not even receive firmware updates, so plan on a bundle.
See licensing in detailChoose your support level
Enhanced Support comes with every protection bundle: 24/7 access, firmware updates, and advanced-replacement hardware warranty. Enhanced Plus is the upgrade for sites that cannot wait, adding VIP support, a Technical Account Manager option, and, for a high-availability pair, advanced replacement on the passive unit. Most businesses are well served by Enhanced; critical sites step up to Plus.
Compare support tiersChoose how you pay
The same protection is available two ways: a fixed multi-year term, or a rolling monthly subscription. Neither changes the features you get, only the commitment and the cost profile. The table below lays out the trade-off.
Term subscription or monthly?
Both cover the same Standard or Xstream protection. The right one depends on your cash flow and how settled your needs are.
| Multi-year term1, 3, or 5 years | Monthly subscriptionrolling | |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | Locked for the full term, no annual increases | Billed each month at the current rate |
| Upfront cost | Paid up front for the term | Low, spread month to month |
| Best value | Usually the lowest total cost, especially at 3 or 5 years | Convenience over lowest cost |
| Flexibility | Set for the term you choose | Scale or stop with little notice |
| Renewal | Renews on a set date, no mid-term gaps | Auto-renews until you cancel |
| Good fit for | Settled sites wanting budget certainty and best value | Growing, seasonal, or uncertain needs, and MSP-style billing |
A simple rule: if your setup is stable and you want the lowest cost, take a multi-year term. If you value flexibility or want to spread the cost, take the monthly subscription. We will price both so you can see the difference.

Buying questions.
How do I know what model size I need?
Two things decide it: how many users are behind the firewall and how fast your internet is. Those set the model range. Match on threat protection and TLS throughput for your chosen model rather than the headline firewall number, which is why we size it with you.
Does a virtual or cloud firewall have fewer features?
No. Every deployment runs the same Sophos Firewall software with the same features. Hardware appliances add accelerated performance; virtual and cloud are about where the firewall runs, not what it can do.
Which protection bundle should I get?
Most businesses choose Xstream Protection, which includes zero-day sandboxing, DNS Protection, NDR, and threat response on top of network and web protection. Standard Protection is the leaner option for simpler single sites. A Base License alone is not enough to inspect threats or receive updates.
Is a multi-year term cheaper than monthly?
Usually, yes. A multi-year term locks pricing and tends to be the lowest total cost, especially at 3 or 5 years. Monthly costs a little more for the flexibility of a rolling commitment. We quote both so you can compare.
Do I have to manage the firewall myself?
You need an administrator or a managed provider. Sophos Central makes management straightforward, and we can help with setup or ongoing management if you would rather not run it in-house.
