Sophos Updates 2026: Fusion, HWaaS & Firewall News

Posted by Saif Khan on 2026 Sep 7th

Sophos has moved fast in 2026. Since the spring, the biggest news is the launch of Sophos Fusion, an AI-native platform that ties the company’s tools together, along with a new way for managed providers to buy firewalls and steady maintenance on the firewall line. Here is a short rundown of the verified changes from April 2026 to now, and where they fit if you buy Sophos online in Canada or the United States. Nuformat is an independent Sophos partner, not Sophos itself.

Sophos Fusion (launched July 15, 2026)

Sophos introduced Sophos Fusion, which it describes as an AI-native cybersecurity defense system that shares data and coordinates response across endpoint, network, email, cloud, and identity. Sophos states that Fusion is the platform itself, not a separate product you buy. The purchasable pieces are the services that run on it, several of which reached or are reaching general availability between August and October 2026:

  • Sophos Next-Gen SIEM – long-term log retention, compliance reporting, and analytics, priced by users and servers rather than data volume. Generally available August 15, 2026.
  • Sophos XDR (rebuilt on Secureworks Taegis) – thousands of additional detectors, a new analyst experience, and built-in SOAR automation. Generally available August 15, 2026.
  • Sophos MDR – expanded with continuous, AI-enabled threat hunting and broader two-way response across endpoint, firewall, cloud, email, and identity. Generally available August 15, 2026.
  • Sophos AI Defense – visibility and control over the AI tools staff use, including shadow AI, and protection for the data those tools can reach. Early access in August 2026, general availability in October 2026.
  • Sophos CISO Advantage – CISO-level guidance with control validation, compliance mapping, and risk assessment. Availability beginning October 2026.

Sophos says the rollout for existing XDR and MDR customers began in August and proceeds in phases, with no agent redeployment required.

Firewall Hardware as a Service (July 1, 2026)

Sophos launched Sophos Firewall Hardware as a Service (HWaaS), a way for managed service providers to deliver XGS Series hardware through monthly MSP Flex billing instead of an upfront purchase. The monthly price covers the XGS appliance (select models), standard shipping, and the Xstream Protection subscription. Buying hardware upfront is still available; HWaaS simply adds a recurring option.

Firewall maintenance and management updates

The firewall line kept up its steady cadence through the period. Sophos published a Config Studio tool to speed firewall reviews and migrations (June 30, 2026), shipped ongoing maintenance releases for Sophos Firewall v22 (which first launched in January 2026), and rolled out monthly Sophos Central firewall-management improvements such as a consolidated inventory view.

What this means for your business

If you already run Sophos XDR or MDR, the Fusion upgrade adds capability without a new purchase or redeployment, so the practical step is to review what the expanded detection and response now covers. If long-term log retention or compliance reporting has been a gap, Next-Gen SIEM is worth a look. And if AI tools are spreading through your business, AI Defense is Sophos’s answer to governing them. For managed providers, HWaaS changes how a firewall deal can be structured. None of this is region-specific: Sophos sells the same portfolio into Canada and the United States, and Nuformat sizes and quotes it for both.
